Best mattress for back, hip and shoulder pain
Morning aches are often blamed on age or a bad night, but the mattress itself is frequently the real culprit. When a mattress is the wrong firmness for your body and sleep position, it forces your spine out of its natural alignment for 7-8 hours a night, which can create or worsen back, hip and shoulder pain over time.
How firmness relates to pain, by position
Side sleepers put concentrated pressure on the shoulder and hip. A mattress that's too firm doesn't let these points sink in enough, pinching nerves and blood flow and often causing shoulder or hip pain that's worse right after waking. A medium-soft surface that contours at the shoulder while still supporting the waist tends to help.
Back sleepers need the lower back's natural curve supported without the hips sinking too low, which is why a medium-firm surface is usually recommended for lower back pain. Stomach sleepers are the trickiest case: a soft mattress lets the midsection sink, arching the lower back and straining it, so a firmer surface that keeps the spine closer to flat is generally better โ though stomach sleeping itself is the position most associated with neck and lower back strain.
Material matters as much as firmness
Memory foam contours closely and can relieve pressure points, but it can also trap heat and feel too soft for some back and stomach sleepers. Latex offers similar pressure relief with more bounce and less heat retention. Hybrid mattresses, combining coils with a foam or latex comfort layer, often give a good balance of support and cushioning, which is why they're a common recommendation for people dealing with joint or back pain.
When to see a doctor
A better mattress can meaningfully reduce mechanical, position-related aches, but it isn't a treatment for underlying conditions. See a doctor if pain is severe, spreads down an arm or leg, comes with numbness or tingling, doesn't improve after a few weeks of better sleep setup, or started after an injury.
